IIT Bombay Launches Portal for Agricultural Drought Forecasts
IN · Published Nov 2, 2026
• IIT Bombay has introduced a public web portal, KrishiDrought, capable of forecasting agricultural droughts across India up to four weeks in advance.
• Developed by the Ecohydrology research group at the Centre for Studies in Resources Engineering (CSRE) in collaboration with the Centre for Climate Studies, the portal uses satellite data, hydroclimatic datasets, and advanced deep learning models.

Impact & Risks

The portal is expected to benefit farmers, government agencies, and other stakeholders by offering timely insights into potential drought conditions. Declining soil moisture levels, a key indicator of agricultural health, can now be monitored to identify regions at risk. This proactive approach could reduce agricultural losses and improve preparedness. However, the announcement did not specify how the forecasts would be disseminated to farmers, raising concerns about accessibility and on-ground implementation.
