• Mumbai is currently experiencing an intense heatwave following the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon on 3 October
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and nearby areas, including Palghar, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, and Ratnagiri. Maximum temperatures in the region have risen by 3-4°C above normal, with Colaba recording 37.4°C on Friday, 5.6°C above the seasonal average. The heat is attributed to delayed sea breezes, reduced cloud cover, and an anti-cyclonic circulation near Mumbai. The IMD has also noted that El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean could lead to warmer-than-usual weather in the coming months.

Impact & Risks

The ongoing heatwave is causing discomfort for residents in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers. The combination of high heat and humidity is likely to exacerbate the situation, making outdoor activities challenging. While no immediate warnings have been issued for Konkan and Goa, the above-normal temperatures could persist, potentially impacting daily life and energy consumption.
