Mumbai redevelopment strains water, power, and infrastructure systems
IN · Published Oct 5, 2026
• Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are undergoing significant redevelopment, with high-rise construction increasing built density.
• This surge is placing immense stress on water supply, power systems, roads, public transport, fire response, sewerage, waste management, and environmental buffers.

Impact & Risks

The redevelopment wave is expected to exacerbate existing infrastructure challenges in Mumbai, potentially leading to water shortages, power outages, and increased vulnerability to extreme weather events. The city's municipal water supply, currently at 4,000 million litres per day (MLD), is projected to fall short of the 2041 demand of 6,535 MLD. Similarly, Maharashtra's peak electricity demand is expected to rise from 25,530 MW in October 2026 to 41,956 MW by 2033-34, straining power systems further. These issues could impact residents' daily lives and emergency response capabilities during extreme weather conditions.
