• Mumbai and several districts in Maharashtra are experiencing a surge in temperatures following the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon on 3 October
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for heatwave conditions in multiple districts, including Mumbai, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. On 9 October, Mumbai's Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 37.6°C, which is 4.5°C above the seasonal average. The IMD predicts that elevated temperatures will persist until at least 14 October, with some improvement expected from 11 October. Dry weather is likely to dominate during this period.

Impact & Risks

The ongoing heatwave poses health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. The high temperatures and humidity levels may lead to heat-related illnesses, including dehydration and heatstroke. Additionally, the heatwave could exacerbate concerns about agricultural productivity, potentially impacting food supply and inflation. Economists have raised alarms about the potential for weather-related disruptions to crop production, especially with the possibility of a strengthening El Niño.
