Nepal Floods Highlight Hydropower Vulnerabilities in Himalayan Region

On 26 August 2026, a catastrophic glacial event near Langtang Lirung mountain on the Nepal-Tibet border triggered a massive flood in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli valleys.
A vertical section of a glacier, estimated at 100-200 million cubic metres, sheared off and fell into the valley below, causing a tsunami of ice, rock, water, and debris.

Impact & Risks

The flood caused widespread destruction in Nepal's Bhote Koshi and Trishuli valleys, with settlements, infrastructure, and hydropower projects severely impacted. The loss of life and property highlights the dangers of constructing infrastructure in areas prone to glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and other natural disasters. The lack of proper environmental impact assessments and oversight of worker safety further exacerbates the risks.
