Unusual Stratospheric Ozone Enhancement Observed Over North Bay of Bengal
IN · Published Aug 26, 2026
Scientists from Indian national laboratories have reported an unusual enhancement in stratospheric ozone levels over the North Bay of Bengal.
This anomaly was detected during the NetRAD-ASMA campaign conducted from 12–18 February 2024, involving ST/MST radars and balloon-borne experiments.

Impact & Risks

The findings have significant implications for stratospheric chemistry, atmospheric circulation, and the regional radiation budget. Elevated ozone levels may alter the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth's surface, potentially impacting ecosystems and human health. The anomaly also highlights the role of deep convection in modifying stratospheric ozone distribution, which could influence climate models and weather predictions.
