Prolonged late-summer heat and variable precipitation patterns are driving accelerated crop maturity across the Midwest, particularly in regions like southern Indiana and Kentucky.
According to Cody Hornaday, a technical agronomist with Koch Agronomic Services, growing degree units (GDUs) in southern Indiana are nearing record levels, with farmers in some areas already starting harvest two weeks ahead of schedule.

Impact & Risks

The accelerated crop maturity poses challenges for farmers, particularly in areas with standability issues caused by nitrogen losses and late-season rainfall. Diseases like fusarium crown rot may not be visually apparent but could lead to lodging losses during harvest. Farmers in northern Illinois and northern Indiana, which experienced record rainfall recently, may face additional risks. Soybean fields with insufficient weed control are also at risk of yield losses due to aggressive weeds like waterhemp and Palmer amaranth. These conditions require careful field scouting and prioritization of harvest schedules to mitigate potential losses.
