Heavy Rainfall and Lightning Expected in Eastern India
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-north Odisha coasts as of 29th August
• This system is expected to bring isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal on 30th August, Jharkhand on 31st August, and Odisha from 29th August to 1st September. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha on 29th and 30th August. Additionally, moderate to severe lightning activity is anticipated over Gangetic West Bengal on 29th August. Northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, is also expected to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall during the period from 29th August to 3rd September.
Impact & Risks
The heavy to very heavy rainfall in Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand may lead to waterlogging, localised flooding, and disruption of daily activities. Extremely heavy rainfall in Odisha on 29th and 30th August could exacerbate these risks, particularly in low-lying areas. Moderate to severe lightning activity over Gangetic West Bengal poses a risk to life and property. In Northeast India, prolonged rainfall may lead to landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas, especially in hilly regions.
