IN · Published Nov 2, 2026
• Cyclone Murasu 2026, a severe cyclonic storm, has developed over the Bay of Bengal and is advancing towards the eastern coast of India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the cyclone intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on 2 November
• It is expected to make landfall near Ongole, Andhra Pradesh, between Nellore and Narsapur, during the night of 2-3 November. The storm is accompanied by wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, gusting up to 120 kmph, and is likely to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, coastal flooding, and a storm surge of 1-1.5 metres. The IMD has issued a red cyclone warning for Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu coasts. The cyclone originated from a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal and has rapidly intensified due to favourable atmospheric conditions, including warm sea surface temperatures and low wind shear.

Impact & Risks

Cyclone Murasu 2026 poses significant risks to coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and neighbouring states. Heavy rainfall is expected to cause urban flooding, riverine flooding, and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Strong winds, with gusts up to 120 kmph, may damage infrastructure, uproot trees, and disrupt power and communication networks. Coastal areas face the threat of a storm surge, which could inundate low-lying regions, particularly in Bapatla, Krishna, and Prakasam districts. Agricultural losses are anticipated, with standing crops, plantations, and orchards at risk. Fishing activities have been suspended due to rough sea conditions, impacting coastal livelihoods. Authorities are on high alert, with evacuation and disaster response measures underway to mitigate the cyclone's impact.
