Monsoon Retreats from Goa Six Days Ahead of Schedule
IN · Published Oct 9, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the southwest monsoon has begun retreating from Goa six days earlier than its usual withdrawal date of October
• As of October 8, the monsoon has also withdrawn from remaining parts of Maharashtra and some areas of Karnataka, Telangana, and Odisha. The withdrawal line now passes through Panaji, indicating a partial retreat from Goa. This early withdrawal follows one of the most deficient monsoon seasons in decades for the state, with Goa receiving only 2,055.4 mm of rainfall against a normal of 3,007.8 mm, marking a 31.7% deficit. The retreating monsoon has led to clearer skies and rising temperatures, with Panaji recording a maximum of 35.6°C on October 7, which is 4.6°C above normal.

Impact & Risks

The early retreat of the monsoon and the significant rainfall deficit have left Goa facing a warmer and drier period. The state experienced nearly 952 mm less rainfall than average, which could impact water resources, agriculture, and local ecosystems. The rising temperatures, with highs reaching 35.6°C in Panaji, may lead to increased discomfort for residents and potential heat-related health risks. However, no immediate weather warnings have been issued for the region.
