Philadelphia Residents to Receive 15% Discount on Flood Insurance
US · Published Sep 2, 2026
• Starting April 2026, residents of Philadelphia will be eligible for a 15% discount on flood insurance policies issued through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This initiative, facilitated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS) programme, is expected to save the community an estimated $424,000 annually. The discount applies automatically to eligible policies written on or after 1 April
• Philadelphia earned a Class 7 designation in the CRS programme due to its efforts in reducing flood risks and improving flood resilience. The city's Flood Risk Management Task Force, comprising representatives from 15 city departments, played a key role in achieving this milestone.

Impact & Risks

The discount will make flood insurance more affordable for homeowners, renters, and businesses in Philadelphia, encouraging broader adoption of these policies. Flooding can occur anywhere in the city, not just in high-risk zones, making this initiative crucial for financial protection against potential damages. However, the discount applies only to NFIP policies and not private insurance. Residents are advised to consult their insurance agents for specific policy details and eligibility.
