IN · Published Oct 20, 2026
• The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a forecast for heavy to very heavy rainfall in seven districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, October 20,
• The affected districts include Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, and Villupuram. Additionally, Puducherry and Karaikal are also under the same alert. The rainfall is attributed to an upper-air cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above sea level over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu coast, along with a trough extending towards the northwest Bay of Bengal. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected in several parts of the state.

Impact & Risks

The heavy to very heavy rainfall poses risks of waterlogging, localised flooding, and disruption to daily activities in the affected districts. Thunderstorms and lightning increase the risk of accidents, while strong winds may cause damage to weak structures and trees. Residents in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and other districts under heavy rain alerts should remain cautious. Coastal areas, including Puducherry and Karaikal, may experience rough weather conditions, potentially impacting fishing and marine activities.
