Maharashtra Begins Monsoon Withdrawal Amid Rising October Heat
IN · Published Oct 2, 2026
• Maharashtra is entering the southwest monsoon withdrawal phase in early October 2026, leading to drier air and rising daytime temperatures.
• Pune and Mumbai are experiencing warmer conditions as rainfall activity weakens.

Impact & Risks

The withdrawal of the monsoon is significant for Maharashtra, which has experienced a rainfall deficit of around 17–18% this season. This shortfall has led to drought declarations in 265 of the state's 358 tehsils, affecting farmers and water management efforts. Rising temperatures and reduced rainfall could exacerbate challenges for agriculture, particularly in areas with insufficient soil moisture. Reservoir levels are also below average, increasing concerns about water availability. While isolated rainfall remains possible, widespread monsoon activity is weakening, leaving limited opportunities for replenishing water resources.
