Impact & Risks

Stubble burning contributes to worsening air quality in northern India, particularly in Delhi-NCR, where it adds to the seasonal smog problem. The practice releases harmful pollutants, including particulate matter, which can cause respiratory and cardiovascular health issues. The economic and logistical challenges of accessing residue-management machinery and the lack of viable alternatives for crop residue disposal exacerbate the problem. The situation poses significant health risks to millions of residents in the affected regions.
