• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Odisha as a depression over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal is expected to cross the Odisha coast near Puri during the early hours of 20 July
• Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast across the state until 23 July, with isolated areas experiencing extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm. Districts such as Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur are under the red warning, while others like Kandhamal, Boudh, Balangir, and Nuapada are under orange warnings. Squally weather with wind speeds of 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, is expected along the Odisha coast and adjoining areas of the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into these waters until 20 July due to rough sea conditions. Flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides are possible in vulnerable areas. Source time: not specified.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall and squally weather pose risks of flash floods, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and inundation of agricultural fields. Vulnerable hilly regions may experience mudslides or landslides, while kutcha roads and houses could face damage. Urban areas may see traffic congestion due to waterlogging in underpasses and reduced visibility. River water levels are expected to rise significantly, increasing the risk of flooding. Coastal and fishing communities are particularly at risk due to rough sea conditions and high wind speeds.
