IMD Issues 'Extremely Heavy Rainfall' Alert for Odisha
IN · Published Oct 12, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'Extremely Heavy Rainfall' alert for Odisha and warned of intensified monsoon activity across 22 states over the next 60 hours.
• This is due to the likely formation of a low-pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall is expected to cause localised flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and traffic disruptions, particularly in Odisha, Bihar, and parts of Northeast India. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal due to squally weather and strong winds reaching 60-80 kmph. The Western Himalayan region may also face risks of landslides and flash floods as rainfall intensifies. Subdued rainfall activity is expected over Northwest India and South Peninsular India, reducing immediate risks in those areas.
