Loo Winds Intensify Pre-Monsoon Heatwaves in Northern India
IN · Published Sep 7, 2026
The Loo, a hot and dry local wind, is prevalent across northern and north-western India, particularly in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.
This wind typically occurs during summer afternoons and is characterised by very high temperatures and low humidity.

Impact & Risks

The Loo winds have severe impacts on agriculture and human health. They cause a sharp drop in humidity, leading to increased evapotranspiration, soil moisture loss, and stress on crops and vegetation. This can result in agricultural challenges, including reduced yields. For humans, the extreme heat and dryness can lead to heatstroke and dehydration, particularly during intense spells. Additionally, the dust carried by the winds can impair visibility and contribute to respiratory discomfort.
