A depression over Jharkhand and adjoining areas of northwest Bengal has intensified, leading to heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across multiple states in India.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the system was located approximately 100 km northeast of Ranchi as of 5:30 AM IST on August 18, 2026, and is moving west-northwestwards.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall poses significant risks, including waterlogging in low-lying areas, rapid rises in river and stream levels, and potential local flooding. Jharkhand is expected to bear the brunt of the weather system, with rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm in some districts. Thunderstorms and strong winds could disrupt daily life and agricultural activities, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu-Puducherry. Lightning remains a major hazard, especially in open areas, increasing the risk of injuries or fatalities.
