An Air Quality Advisory has been issued for San Luis Obispo (SLO) County due to significant wildfire smoke impacts from the Timber and Plaskett Fires in Big Sur.
According to the SLO County Air Pollution Control District (APCD), smoke levels are expected to worsen starting at 3 PM on August 27, 2026, and continue through Friday.

Impact & Risks

The wildfire smoke poses significant health risks, especially to sensitive groups, including individuals with pre-existing heart or lung conditions, older adults, children, and pregnant individuals. Symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, and irritated eyes may occur even in healthy individuals if smoke levels rise. The AQI is expected to reach unhealthy levels in some areas, potentially causing widespread discomfort and health issues. Residents in affected regions should prepare for rapidly changing air quality conditions and take precautions to minimize exposure to harmful smoke and particulate matter.
