Gujarat Government May Declare Drought in Rainfall-Deficient Areas
IN · Published Oct 26, 2026
• The Gujarat government has completed preliminary surveys in regions affected by deficient rainfall, particularly in Saurashtra, and is prepared to declare them 'scarcity-hit' or 'drought-hit' if necessary.
• State Labour Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya stated that water and fodder are being provided to areas in need, and the government will continue to address these requirements.

Impact & Risks

The rainfall deficit has led to water scarcity and challenges in accessing fodder in affected areas, particularly in Saurashtra and Kutch. Villages in Devbhumi Dwarka district are reportedly facing severe water shortages, with residents travelling 15 to 20 km to reach fodder distribution centres, which should ideally be within 7 km. Farmers and rural communities are at risk of prolonged water and fodder shortages, which could impact agriculture and livestock, exacerbating economic and social challenges.
