A recent study published in *Nature Communications* highlights the effectiveness of prescribed burns in protecting California's giant sequoias from extreme wildfires.
Researchers analyzed approximately 26,400 sequoias in the Sierra Nevada region, finding that trees in areas treated with controlled burns were nearly four times more likely to survive the devastating 2020 Castle Fire and 2021 KNP Complex Fire.

The study reveals that without prescribed burns, giant sequoias face heightened risks from increasingly severe wildfires fueled by climate change. The 2020 and 2021 wildfires alone killed thousands of these iconic trees, which are critical to biodiversity and carbon storage. Untreated areas with accumulated dead wood and vegetation are particularly vulnerable, creating conditions for high-intensity fires that even these fire-resistant trees cannot survive. The loss of sequoias not only impacts ecosystems but also diminishes cultural and historical heritage, as these trees have stood for millennia.
