Himalayan Glacial Lakes Pose Rising Flood Risks
Himalayan Glacial Lakes Pose Rising Flood Risks
IN · Published Nov 4, 2026
• The Himalayan region, often referred to as the 'Third Pole' due to its vast ice reserves, is facing an increasing risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
• These floods occur when water from glacial lakes, formed by melting glaciers, is suddenly released due to the collapse of natural barriers.

Impact & Risks

India has recorded over 6,000 deaths from GLOFs since 1835, the highest among eight Himalayan countries. States such as Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Arunachal Pradesh are especially at risk due to their proximity to glacial lakes. Recent events, such as the 2023 GLOF at South Lhonak Lake in Sikkim, which caused significant loss of life and infrastructure damage, highlight the severe threat posed by these floods. The unstable geological nature of the Himalayas and the rapid expansion of glacial lakes due to climate change exacerbate the risks, endangering downstream communities and critical infrastructure like hydropower projects.
