A rapidly intensifying El Niño is set to dominate North American weather patterns through fall 2026 and winter 2026-
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC), there is a 90% probability of a very strong El Niño persisting into early 2027, with a 69% chance of reaching historic strength during October-December. This phenomenon is expected to strengthen the subtropical jet stream, leading to above-normal precipitation across the southern U.S. and northern Mexico, including regions like Southern California, Texas, and Baja California. Meanwhile, warmer-than-average temperatures are anticipated across western and central Canada, as well as parts of the northern U.S. The Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to remain below normal, with only nine named storms and one major hurricane projected for 2026, largely due to El Niño's suppressive effects on tropical cyclone development.

The enhanced precipitation in the southern U.S. and northern Mexico could lead to localized flooding, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall. Warmer conditions in Canada and the northern U.S. may reduce heating demand, impacting energy markets. However, the unusual combination of a strong El Niño and a negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) introduces uncertainty, potentially altering traditional weather patterns. The Atlantic hurricane season's reduced activity lowers the risk of landfalling storms, but the 16% probability of a major hurricane affecting the U.S. coastline remains a concern.
