Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal Continues; Heavy Rainfall in Parts of India
IN · Published Oct 5, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the continued withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon as of 5th October
• The withdrawal line currently passes through locations including Supaul, Ranchi, Raipur, Brahmapuri, Parbhani, Baramati, and Harnai. A trough extends from Gangetic West Bengal to Madhya Maharashtra, and another from northwest Uttar Pradesh to east Bangladesh at lower tropospheric levels. Over the past 24 hours, very heavy rainfall (12-20 cm) was recorded in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, while heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) occurred in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka. Gusty winds (30-40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph) are expected in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab during 8th-9th October.

Impact & Risks

The ongoing withdrawal of the monsoon is expected to bring changes in weather patterns across India. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has already impacted regions such as Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Kerala, potentially causing localised flooding and waterlogging. Gusty winds in northern states like Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi may disrupt outdoor activities and pose risks to weak structures. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, increasing the risk of lightning strikes and related hazards.
