Fresh low-pressure system forms over Bay of Bengal, heavy rain expected in South India

A new low-pressure area is developing over the north Bay of Bengal, which is expected to influence monsoon activity across eastern and central India.
This system, forming amidst a strengthening El Niño phenomenon, could bring concentrated rainfall to regions that have experienced deficits this season.

Impact & Risks

The South Peninsula, particularly Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Telangana, could see significant rainfall, alleviating the seasonal deficit but also posing risks of localised flooding. Eastern states like Odisha and West Bengal may experience extremely heavy rainfall, which could disrupt daily life and agricultural activities. The uneven rainfall distribution linked to El Niño may lead to erratic weather patterns, with intense bursts of rain followed by dry spells.
