Northeast Monsoon Commences as Southwest Monsoon Withdraws from India
IN · Published Oct 15, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the entire country as of 15th October 2026, marking the onset of the northeast monsoon.
• The northeast monsoon has commenced over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, and Kerala & Mahe.

Impact & Risks

The onset of the northeast monsoon is expected to bring significant rainfall to southern peninsular India, particularly Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala. The heavy rainfall recorded in Tamil Nadu over the past 24 hours indicates the potential for localised flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Residents in these regions should remain vigilant, especially in areas prone to landslides and flash floods. The cyclonic circulation over south coastal Tamil Nadu may further enhance rainfall activity in the coming days.
