Orange Alert Issued for Five Kerala Districts Amid Heavy Rain Forecast
IN · Published Oct 18, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for five districts in Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur, warning of isolated very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
• A yellow alert has been sounded for nine other districts, where isolated heavy rainfall is likely.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall poses risks of landslides, flash floods, and riverbank overflow, particularly in vulnerable areas. Strong winds accompanying the rain may lead to accidents caused by falling trees, electric poles, signboards, and walls. Urban areas may experience localised flooding, and travel disruptions are expected on roads near water bodies and flooded stretches. Residents downstream of dams and along riverbanks are advised to take precautionary measures to avoid potential hazards.
