• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day weather alert for Kerala, forecasting widespread rain, thunderstorms, and lightning across the state.
• On Saturday, 17 October 2026, five districts—Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur—are under an orange alert for very heavy rainfall, with expected precipitation between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

Impact & Risks

The heavy rainfall poses risks of waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas. The orange alert districts are expected to experience the most severe impacts, with potential disruptions to transportation and daily activities. Gusty winds and lightning may also pose hazards to outdoor activities and infrastructure. Lakshadweep is similarly forecast to experience heavy rainfall, which could affect local communities and maritime activities.
