Evacuations Continue as Mukluk Fire Grows to 5,533 Acres in Tok, Alaska

The Mukluk Fire near Tok, Alaska, has grown to an estimated 5,533 acres as of August 18, 2026, according to the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DFFP).
The fire, which began on August 17 near the Alaska Highway, has been fueled by strong winds and extreme fire behavior.

Impact & Risks

The Mukluk Fire has already damaged approximately 20 homes, with additional structures at risk. The fire's rapid growth and extreme behavior, including spotting and active flames, pose significant threats to the local community. Residents in the evacuation zone face risks from active fire, downed power lines, falling trees, and hidden ash pits. The Alaska Highway remains open, but areas north of the highway from Mackenzie Trail to East 5th Street, including Red Fox Drive, are under Level 3 GO! evacuation orders.
