As autumn progresses and nights grow longer, trees use light-sensing proteins called phytochromes to measure the increasing darkness. This triggers hormonal changes that form a seal at the base of each leaf stem, cutting off nutrient flow and preparing the tree for winter dormancy. The combination of longer nights and cool temperatures creates the ideal conditions for vibrant fall colors.
