• Learn how erratic rainfall impacts production and the measures taken to ensure stable supplies.

Effects of Erratic Monsoon on Crop Production

Erratic monsoon rains can significantly impact crop yields. For instance, a weak southwest monsoon in 2026 affected the sowing of rice, corn, and soybeans, leading to reduced production. Rice production was forecasted to drop to 147 million tonnes from a record 154 million tonnes in 2025-26. Similarly, soybean production was revised down by 8% to 9.6 million tonnes. Despite these challenges, record carryover stocks from previous years have helped offset production declines, ensuring sufficient domestic supplies.
