AI has transformed global weather forecasting by offering tools to predict complex phenomena like the monsoon. DIL-India researchers are developing advanced AI-based forecasting systems to predict the start of the monsoon at local scales and with longer lead times. These systems use statistical and physics-based models to provide decision-oriented metrics tailored to the needs of farmers. For example, in 2025, the Indian Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare distributed AI forecasts to 38 million farmers, accurately predicting the monsoon onset and setting a benchmark for climate adaptation strategies.
