The festival holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. Women begin their fast with a pre-dawn meal called Sargi, traditionally prepared by their mother-in-law. The fast is observed without food or water until moonrise. In the evening, women perform a puja, which includes listening to the Karwa Chauth katha and offering prayers. The fast is broken after sighting the moon, with the husband offering the first sip of water and food to his wife.
