Cold fronts can bring significant changes to weather, including temperature drops, wind shifts, and precipitation.
Learn what cold fronts are, how they form, and how to prepare for their impact.

How Cold Fronts Form

Cold fronts form when a mass of cold, dense air moves into an area occupied by warmer, lighter air. The cold air, being heavier, wedges itself under the warm air, causing the warm air to rise. This rising air cools and condenses, often forming clouds and precipitation. The speed and intensity of a cold front depend on factors such as the temperature difference between the air masses and the speed of the advancing cold air.
