Understanding the Indian Monsoon: A Seasonal Phenomenon
Global · Published Sep 2, 2026
The Indian monsoon is a seasonal wind shift that brings heavy rainfall to the region.
Learn how it develops, its significance, and its connection to global phenomena like El Niño.

How Does the Monsoon Develop?

The monsoon develops due to temperature differences between the ocean and the land. During the summer months, the land heats up faster than the surrounding ocean, creating a low-pressure area over the Indian subcontinent. This pressure difference drives moist air from the Indian Ocean toward the land, resulting in heavy rainfall. Conversely, during the winter months, the land cools faster than the ocean, reversing the wind direction and leading to the dry phase of the monsoon.
