Heavy Rainfall in Uttar Pradesh Damages Kharif Crops, Triggers Flood-Like Conditions
• Uttar Pradesh has experienced heavy rainfall over the past few days, with the state receiving nearly 25 times its normal rainfall on 27 September
• This has led to flood-like conditions in several districts, damaging standing Kharif crops such as paddy, sugarcane, maize, and pulses. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported an average rainfall of 45.6 mm on 27 September, compared to the normal 1.8 mm. The cumulative monsoon rainfall in the state has now reached 802 mm, 8% above the normal. Districts like Farrukhabad, Kannauj, and Shahjahanpur are among the worst affected.
Impact & Risks
The heavy rainfall has caused significant damage to crops, with flattened paddy and sugarcane fields and waterlogged areas affecting pulses, oilseeds, and horticultural crops. Prolonged waterlogging may delay Rabi crop sowing. Rain-related incidents have resulted in 81 deaths, 62 injuries, and damage to 2,254 houses. Rising water levels in rivers, exacerbated by rainfall in neighbouring Uttarakhand and Nepal, pose additional flood risks in low-lying areas.
