The report warns that the continued rise in greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from major emitters like the U.S., is exacerbating global warming. The planet is on track for a temperature increase of up to 2.8°C this century, which could lead to catastrophic consequences such as significant sea level rise, mass extinction of species, and more frequent and severe natural disasters. The U.N. emphasises that all countries, especially large emitters, must take immediate and substantial action to reduce emissions. Failure to meet the Paris Climate Agreement's target of limiting warming to below 2°C could result in irreversible damage to ecosystems and human livelihoods worldwide.
