Dangerous Heat Risks Loom Over 2026 World Cup Matches
US · Published Jun 4, 2026
An NPR analysis has revealed that over one-third of the 2026 World Cup matches are at high risk for dangerously hot and humid conditions.
The tournament, hosted across 16 cities in North America, coincides with summer heat, with historical data showing wet bulb globe temperatures (WBGT) exceeding 79°F (26°C) for many games.

Why It's Important?

The extreme heat poses significant risks, including heat exhaustion and dehydration, for players, referees, and fans. Workers and volunteers, who may spend extended hours outdoors, are also vulnerable. Cities like Miami and Houston, with historical averages of 84°F (29°C) during this period, are particularly concerning. The lack of air conditioning in some stadiums and the prohibition of refillable water bottles could exacerbate these risks. Climate change is expected to intensify these challenges, making heat waves more frequent and severe.
