The loss of glaciers in the American West is affecting ecosystems, water supplies, and hydropower production. Glaciers provide critical late-summer water for cold-adapted fish and stream life, which are now at risk due to reduced meltwater. Additionally, retreating glaciers on steep-sided volcanoes in the Cascade Range are increasing the likelihood of landslides and debris flows, posing hazards to infrastructure and communities. These risks are expected to grow as glaciers continue to shrink.
