• Flash floods, characterised by sudden and rapid flooding within minutes to a few hours, have been highlighted as a significant risk in various regions.
• These events are often triggered by cloudbursts, intense localised rainfall, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the Himalayan regions, dam or embankment failures, urbanisation leading to impervious surfaces and blocked drainage, as well as deforestation and slope destabilisation in hilly areas.

Impact & Risks

Flash floods pose severe risks to life, property, and infrastructure. In hilly terrains like Uttarakhand, they can result in landslides and significant damage to settlements. Urban areas such as Chennai are vulnerable due to blocked drainage systems, leading to waterlogging and disruption of daily life. In arid regions like Rajasthan, dry riverbeds can suddenly flood, endangering nearby communities. The rapid onset of these events often leaves little time for evacuation, increasing the potential for casualties and property damage.
