• An 18-year study conducted by Christian Medical College in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, has revealed that tick-borne spotted fever cases cluster in cooler months, particularly between October and March, with a peak in January.
• The study analysed 2,153 suspected cases from 2007 to 2024, confirming 516 cases of spotted fever group rickettsioses.

Impact & Risks

Spotted fever poses a significant health risk in southern India, particularly in hotspot districts like Vellore and Chittoor. Vulnerable groups include children under ten and housewives, who are more likely to come into contact with tick and mite vectors. If untreated, the disease can lead to severe complications affecting the kidneys, lungs, or central nervous system. The study underscores the need for heightened awareness among healthcare providers and improved diagnostic capacity to prevent misdiagnosis and ensure timely treatment.
