The adoption of satellite technology in crop insurance is a game-changer for Indian farmers, particularly those in regions like Vidarbha, Maharashtra, and Odisha, where smallholder farming is prevalent. Farmers now receive timely payouts, reducing financial stress and the need for emergency borrowing. However, the system is not without limitations. NDVI, while effective, may fail to capture certain types of crop damage, such as lodging or weed infestations. Additionally, cloud cover during critical growth periods can obscure data collection, and the resolution of satellite imagery may not always be sufficient for small plots. There is also a risk of claim rejections due to algorithmic errors, which could disadvantage farmers unfamiliar with the technology.
