NYC aims for 30% tree coverage by 2034
New York City has launched its first urban forest plan to increase tree canopy coverage to 30% by 2034. This initiative, led by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, aims to address the unequal distribution of trees across the city and mitigate the impacts of extreme heat. Currently, less than a quarter of New York City is covered by tree canopy, with Staten Island having the highest coverage at 33.1%. The plan emphasizes the importance of trees in enhancing urban beauty, supporting wildlife, improving air quality, and providing protection during heat waves.
