South Iceland hit by powerful lightning storm
A powerful lightning storm has struck South Iceland, leading to extensive power outages and disruptions across the region. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the storm produced approximately 3,000 lightning strikes, an unusually high number for Iceland. The storm's primary impact was felt south of the capital region and over nearby coastal areas. The BúrfellslÃna 1 transmission line, operated by Landsnet, was directly hit by lightning, causing significant electricity disruptions. Areas such as Mosfellsbær, Landeyjar, VÃk à Mýrdal, Vestmannaeyjar, and Borgarfjörður eystri experienced temporary power outages, affecting homes, businesses, and critical services.
