Consumer Reports Releases Top Sunscreens for 2026
US · Published May 11, 2026
Consumer Reports has published its annual sunscreen ratings for 2026, evaluating over 100 products, including lotions and sprays.
The testing process involved measuring SPF (sun protection factor) by applying sunscreen to small skin areas and exposing them to UVB rays, which cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer.
Water-resistant products were tested after soaking in water for up to 80 minutes.

Why It's Important?

The findings highlight the importance of using sunscreen to protect against harmful UV rays, even if some products fall short of their advertised SPF levels. UVB rays can lead to sunburn and increase the risk of skin cancer, while UVA rays contribute to skin aging and cancer. Consumer Reports advises using broad-spectrum sunscreens with at least SPF 30 for effective protection. Sprays, while convenient, may pose risks such as inhalation or uneven application, especially in windy conditions.
